I finally get a chance to go visit Jamie.

The closer in proximity that you attend a college or university to me, the harder it is for me to visit you. I don't know why this phenomenon occurs, but it seems to have reigned true for at least the past five years. I've visited friends in New York and Philadelphia a couple of times, Oslo three times, Canterbury once but I didn't make it to Iowa (a mere 4 hour drive) until Jennabelle nearly graduated (then I made it up to her by making the trip a couple of times). I swear this doesn't mean that I love you any less...I think it means that I like to travel and sometimes the further the better for my soul.

So once again, I'm a bit late (better late than never, right?) but I finally get to visit Jamie in Indiana. Despite the final destination being INDIANA, I'm pumped to see Jamie (she has to be the most exciting thing in Indiana!) and eat yummy food and drink yummy drinks. Yay!

Miriam and Laura are just so darn adorable! Miriam proposed to Laura (who said "yes" obviously!) last night at the Olive Garden downtown. I ran down Hennepin Ave to get there and was sweating (and probably stinky!) but it was more than worth it :) The whole waitstaff new what was happening and kept peeking through plants and around corners to see if Miriam had pulled out her guitar yet.

If this were to be written in a book and discussed endlessly in an English 101 class, this would be my favorite part, a little foreshadowing action for you: Not knowing that Miriam was going to propose a bit later in the evening, Laura brings up the topic of Miriam putting things she likes into her cleavage...20 minutes later Miriam is down on one knee and pulls the ring-still-in-box from her cleavage. Everything just comes full circle, doesn't it?

Also, Laura's face was precious! When Miriam started playing the guitar and singing behind Laura, Laura turns around and asks, "Miriam, what are you doing with a guitar?" Haha!

SURPRISE, LAURA! And CONGRATS! to both of you.

It is a strange thing for humans to fly in airplanes because our bodies go with the airplane, obviously, but our souls can only walk from one place to another. This explains why we feel so disjointed when we return from a trip.

I got back from Mexico on late on Sunday. Yesterday was really difficult, I just wandered around my house and was not pleasant to talk to. My soul is still walking itself along the mountains of Cuernavaca. It will catch up soon enough.

Bienvenidos a Minnesota, soul.

Tonight I was walking across Oslo alone (don't worry mom and dad, it was 23:45 but just dusk-like, couldn't even see stars) and a small creature passed in front of me. I followed it for a bit...and met a porcupine. I don't think it was a Nord-porcupine ("pinnsvin" pig with pins) because I said, "Hei, åssen går det?" and it didn't phase him. But when I said, "Hola, como estas?" He paused and looked at me for a while. He was a cute little "sak"!

This chance encounter definitely made up for the $10 skitt øl jei hade for frokost i morges. Draining the bank account has never been so wonderful :) Ha det bra.

Today I bought way too many clothes--that definitely won't all fit in my suitcase--and spent way too much money. But all's well because in 48 hours I will be blissfully traversing the Big Salty Pond, and I will return with more stamps in my passport. Yay!!!

I'm going to the land some call Norwegia (okay, not "some", just this one Indian I know named Elham who also can't pronounce her v's and thought the people who spoke "Norwegian" would obviously come from a land called "Norwegia"...Elham was very amusing to live next to).

After Norwegia I will return to the land of fried food and good beer to visit my Brits.

Happy graduation to all those I'm missing. I still love you, no worries. Ha det godt.

Last week I got really quite sunburned at Lobby Day at the Capitol. It's amazing how the April sun can scorch your pasty-Minnesota skin. This week, despite all my best aloe-efforts, my neck is peeling.

One of my students, Shaniqua (I love to play the "Guess my student's race/ethnicity game!" This time I'll tell you, though, she's African-American/Black) saw that my neck was peeling and declared, "Kristen, you're dying! It is totally unnatural for skin to fall off in chunks like that."

Basically, she was calling me a leper.

She then continued to comment on my skintone, "Kristen, you just got the craziest skin colors. *shakes head* I mean, there's pink and red and blue and purple and white and see-through, and now it's all falling off!"

So now I'm a rainbow-leper! Ha! Thanks, Shaniqua.

It's on days like these that I love Minnesota. It is 55 degrees and sunny right now. There is still snow on the ground, which makes the sun even sunnier as your irises win the battle versus your pupils. It beautiful. I sat outside on our porch/deck-like thing, took my fleece socks off and put my feet up. I love you, kjaereste Minnesota.

PS My ticket across the big salty pond is purchased and my Norwegian is crawling along at a snail's pace. Life is good :)

Why is it that one of the most adorable and well-behaved 4th graders I work with must come to school with a fever for three days in a row because his family doesn't qualify for Medicaid, when the CEO of health insurance companies now make over (and this was in the newspaper!) 100 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR!!!!!!! What the hell do you do with $1,000,000 smackers?!! Obviously, you don't let my darling, Hugo, go to the doctor. F*ckers.

Yesterday was rough. At work, my students were complaining and whining their way through my geography lesson. The mother-of-all-headaches pounded the back of my eyeballs. Plus, I was a bit emotional from that so-called premenstrualsyndrome thing.

But the worst was yet to come.

I made the cardinal sin...I reminded my mother that she is menopausal.

What? Was I searching for an early death?!

So I was meant to experience snow this WINTER after all!

Tonight when I left my house tiny ice shavings pelted my uncovered head--ouch! When I went outside again (8 hours later) there were a couple of inches of untouched snow shimmering perfectly in the orange glow of the street lights, enticing me to lay down and make a snow angel :) When I began to leave my tracks in it, the snow squished like sand beneath my feet...I closed my eyes and could almost smell the salty Port Aransas beach.

I scraped my car and made the short trek home, missing my sister. Love you, Katie!
